The counting of votes for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections 2026 got underway on Friday morning, setting the tone for a high-stakes political showdown in Mumbai. Early trends indicate a strong performance by the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance, which includes the BJP and the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), with the coalition moving steadily toward the majority threshold of 114 seats. As of the latest updates, Mahayuti candidates are leading in more than 100 wards, signalling a clear advantage.
On the other side, the opposition camp—comprising the Shiv Sena (UBT), Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), and Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP)—is attempting to hold ground in select pockets. The Congress has chosen to contest the civic polls independently and has managed to secure leads in a few wards.
