Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the former president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), has stirred controversy once again with a shocking remark made during a televised interview. Singh, who is facing multiple sexual harassment allegations from prominent athletes, including Vinesh Phogat, joked about Phogat potentially accusing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of inappropriate behavior in the future.
Singh and Phogat have been in a public feud since last year, when Phogat, along with fellow wrestlers Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, accused the six-time Lok Sabha MP of sexual misconduct. The allegations led to protests at Jantar Mantar and forced Singh to step down as WFI head. He is currently facing criminal charges related to the case.
During the interview, Singh sarcastically commented on a viral photo showing Vinesh Phogat with Rahul Gandhi, insinuating that Phogat could one day accuse Gandhi of harassment as well. His comment has drawn severe criticism and is seen as an attempt to trivialize the serious accusations against him.
In the televised segment, the reporter mentioned the viral picture of Phogat and Gandhi, to which Singh responded:
?It is very amazing, very amazing. Look how she is meeting Rahul ji with her paws stuck. I don?t have a single photo like this. You must have seen how he is meeting with his paws stuck. Someday you will also accuse Rahul ji that he pulled me and held me tight, and I was not able to say anything,? Singh remarked, in a tone that many have condemned as inappropriate and offensive.
This comment follows Singh's previous claims that the Congress party was using wrestlers like Phogat and Malik as "pawns" in a conspiracy to undermine his position in the WFI and damage the ruling BJP. Singh specifically accused Bhupinder Singh Hooda, a former Chief Minister of Haryana, of being part of the plot due to a long-standing rivalry dating back to WFI elections in 2012, in which Singh defeated Hooda?s son.
The sexual harassment accusations against Singh have overshadowed his long-standing dominance in Indian wrestling, which began when he took control of the WFI in 2012. His latest controversial remarks are likely to deepen the divide between him and the wrestling community, as the legal battle over the allegations continues.
As of now, Singh's comments have sparked widespread backlash on social media, with many accusing him of disrespecting both the wrestlers and the sensitive nature of the accusations against him. No official response has yet been made by Vinesh Phogat or Rahul Gandhi regarding Singh?s remarks.
