A devastating shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in northeast British Columbia has claimed the lives of 10 people, including the suspected gunman, sending shockwaves through the small rural community.
Authorities confirmed that multiple victims were discovered inside the school building after emergency services responded to reports of gunfire. According to police, six individuals were pronounced dead at the scene within the school premises. Another victim succumbed to injuries while being transported to hospital. Two additional bodies were later found at a nearby residence believed to be connected to the same incident.
Law enforcement officials stated that the suspected shooter was found dead from what has been described as a self-inflicted injury. Investigators have indicated that, at this stage, they do not believe any other suspects were involved.
In addition to the fatalities, several people were injured in the attack. Two individuals with serious or life-threatening injuries were airlifted to larger medical facilities for urgent treatment. Around 25 others are being examined at a local health centre for injuries that are not considered life-threatening. Medical teams and crisis counsellors have been deployed to assist students, staff and families affected by the tragedy.
Police have assured residents that there is currently no ongoing threat to public safety. However, officers continue to carry out precautionary searches of nearby homes and properties to ensure no one else has been harmed and to determine whether anyone else may have had a connection to the events.
The incident has deeply shaken Tumbler Ridge, a close-knit community unaccustomed to such violence. Schools in the area have been placed on heightened alert, and support services are being arranged to help residents cope with the aftermath.
