Controversies
In February 2024, after a tragic incident where a young girl was attacked by stray dogs in the Pandesara area, Mayor Mavani attributed the spike in dog bite cases to roadside non-vegetarian food stalls. He claimed that improper disposal of non-veg food waste attracted stray dogs and increased aggression. While he highlighted ongoing efforts—such as vaccination and sterilization of around 7,000 stray dogs—many residents criticized him for scapegoating vendors instead of addressing systemic issues like ineffective waste management or inadequate animal control systems.(The BluntTimes)
A SMC general board meeting in May 2025 descended into chaos as councillors from both the BJP and AAP exchanged heated allegations while supposed to pay homage to terror attack victims. Mayor Mavani prematurely declared the agenda approved and ended the meeting amid the turmoil. Security had to intervene to prevent physical confrontation. Critics have raised questions about the mayor’s ability to maintain decorum and handle civic proceedings diplomatically. (TOI)
In October 2024, during a Dussehra (Ravan Dahan) event in Limbayat, Mayor Mavani inadvertently reversed a key message. Instead of stating “the victory of truth over falsehood,” he was heard saying “the victory of falsehood over truth.” The slip-of-the-tongue was caught in a video that quickly went viral. Though he later clarified it was a mistake, the incident drew social media ridicule and opposition criticism. (Gujarat First)
In October 2023, Mayor Mavani performed a surprise visit to the Athwa and Katargam zone offices of SMC. During the walk-through, he discovered irregularities such as absent staff during operational hours and waste material improperly stored. He directed immediate clean-up and issued notices to responsible officials. While some praised his proactive approach, others viewed it as micromanagement and public targeting of lower-level civic staff. (TOI)
In July 2024, during a joint meeting of MLAs and SMC officials—including the Mayor—BJP MLAs publicly accused municipal officers of neglecting complaints and engaging in corrupt practices. The meeting became contentious, with elected representatives calling out civic inaction and inefficiency. While Mayor Mavani was present, the spotlight fell on systemic administration issues. (TOI)
