In a face-saving victory for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Delhi Minister Atishi secured the Kalkaji seat, defeating BJP's Ramesh Bidhuri. However, this win comes amid a major setback for AAP, as top leaders including party chief and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia lost their respective seats.
According to the Election Commission, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leading on 46 seats, while AAP is ahead on 20, as counting progresses. The BJP has officially crossed the majority mark, positioning itself to form the Delhi government after 27 years.
The 2025 Delhi Assembly elections were held on February 5, with 70 constituencies up for grabs. The BJP, which has been out of power in Delhi since 1998, mounted an aggressive campaign to dethrone AAP, which has dominated the capital since 2013. In the last two elections, AAP had completely routed the BJP, reducing it to just three seats in 2015 and eight in 2020.
Atishi, who previously won Kalkaji in 2020 with a margin of 11,393 votes, continued her stronghold in the constituency. In the last election, she secured 55,897 votes (52.28% vote share), defeating BJP’s Dharambir Singh, who got 44,504 votes (41.63%). Congress’s Shivani Chopra finished a distant third with 4,965 votes (4.64%).
With the BJP celebrating its landslide victory, party leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, credited the win to "Modi ki Guarantee," stating that Delhiites have rejected AAP’s governance over issues like Yamuna pollution, broken roads, and the liquor policy scandal. Meanwhile, BJP workers took to the streets with fireworks, dhols, and nagadas, marking their party’s return to power in the capital after nearly three decades.
