External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar Expresses Concern Over Venezuela Crisis, Calls For Peaceful Resolution

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Tuesday expressed serious concern about the ongoing crisis in Venezuela, calling for dialogue and peaceful solutions to protect civilians. His statement comes after recent military actions by the United States in the South American country, which have heightened tensions globally.

Speaking during a meeting with Luxembourg’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Jaishankar stressed that India’s primary concern is the safety and well-being of the Venezuelan people. He highlighted India’s long-standing diplomatic relations with Venezuela and urged all parties to prioritize dialogue over confrontation.

“The welfare and security of the people of Venezuela must be the top priority. We hope that all sides engage constructively to ensure stability and peace in the country,” Jaishankar said.

Earlier this week, the Ministry of External Affairs had also issued a statement expressing deep concern over the situation in Venezuela, emphasizing that India is closely monitoring developments. The ministry reaffirmed its support for peaceful efforts to resolve the crisis and ensure stability in the region.

In response to the volatile situation, India has issued a safety advisory for its citizens in Venezuela. Indians currently in the country are advised to exercise extreme caution, limit their movements, and stay in contact with the Indian Embassy in Caracas for assistance. Non-essential travel to Venezuela has been strongly discouraged.

Former Indian Ambassador to Venezuela, YK Sinha, described India’s approach as “measured,” noting that New Delhi must balance its response carefully to maintain bilateral relations with the United States and other global partners. While many countries have responded cautiously to the U.S. operations, Sinha said only a few nations have openly condemned the intervention.

The crisis in Venezuela escalated recently following a U.S. military operation that targeted key sites in the capital, resulting in the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and casualties among security personnel. The international community remains divided in its response, with some urging restraint and diplomacy, while others strongly denounce the military action as a violation of sovereignty.
