Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah achieved a landmark moment on Wednesday by emerging as the longest-serving Chief Minister in the state’s history, overtaking the record of legendary leader Devaraj Urs. The milestone places Siddaramaiah at the very top of Karnataka’s political timeline, underlining his enduring influence in state politics.
The veteran Congress leader, now in his second term, crossed the historic mark on January 7, pushing his cumulative tenure beyond that of Urs, who was widely known for his transformative work in land reforms and social justice. Siddaramaiah is also among the rare leaders in the state to have completed a full five-year term as Chief Minister, a feat achieved earlier between 2013 and 2018.
Since returning to power in May 2023, Siddaramaiah has steadily added to his record, eventually surpassing all his predecessors. The development comes at a crucial phase for the Congress government, which has already crossed the midway point of its current term, intensifying political discussions around leadership continuity and internal power dynamics.
Responding to the historic achievement, Siddaramaiah struck a modest note, stating that record-breaking was never his political objective. He also reiterated that decisions regarding the completion of his tenure would rest with the Congress leadership at the national level.
Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar congratulated Siddaramaiah and dismissed speculation of internal discord, asserting that there was no confusion within the party leadership. Several senior Congress leaders echoed similar sentiments, expressing confidence that the Chief Minister would continue to lead the government for the remainder of the term.
