In a significant development, the central government is reportedly preparing to introduce a bill aimed at curbing the powers of the Waqf Board over its assets. This move is seen as an effort to enhance accountability and ensure the Waqf properties are used effectively for their intended charitable and religious purposes.
Former Union Minister and BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi emphasized the necessity of this reform. “It’s needed to take out the Waqf system from the ‘touch me not’ thinking. Neither it’s good for the country nor for the community to impose a communal mentality over inclusive reform. It’s good for both -Waqf and ‘waqt’, to find a logical solution to a long pending problem… I don’t know what the actual proposal is from the govt but I believe that it’s needed,” Naqvi stated. He highlighted that finding a logical solution to this long-standing issue is beneficial for both the Waqf properties and the broader community.
The central government had earlier issued a notice to take over 123 properties from the Waqf Board, including prominent sites like Delhi’s Jama Masjid. This decision, based on a two-member committee’s report, indicated that the Delhi Waqf Board had not shown sufficient interest or provided objections regarding these properties. The Urban Development Ministry’s Land and Development Office cited a lack of historical or archaeological significance for some of these properties, further justifying the takeover.

This initiative has sparked varied reactions. While some political leaders and community members view it as a necessary step towards transparency, others express concerns over the potential communal implications and the protection of minority rights.
As the government proceeds with this legislative proposal, it remains to be seen how these changes will impact the administration and utilization of Waqf properties across the country. The bill is expected to foster a more structured and accountable system, aligning the management of Waqf assets with national interests and community welfare.
