From Talks To Tension: J&K CM Omar Abdullah Takes U-Turn On Pakistan, Says ‘No Scope For Dialogue’ Amid Meddling Allegations

In a significant shift from his earlier stance, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has ruled out the possibility of talks with Pakistan, citing its continued interference in the union territory’s internal affairs. Speaking in an interview with the BBC, Abdullah asserted that the current situation does not allow for dialogue between the two nations.

"I don't think they ever stopped meddling. It would be foolish for any of us to suggest that what Jammu and Kashmir has seen has been purely indigenous, without any outside assistance whatsoever," said Abdullah.

His remarks mark a stark contrast to his previous position, where he advocated for diplomatic engagement with Pakistan. Before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Abdullah and his father Farooq Abdullah had strongly pitched for India-Pakistan talks to resolve tensions.

Security Concerns Block Path to Dialogue

When asked if there was any scope for talks with Pakistan, Abdullah stated:
"At the moment, that scope that we would like to see isn't there. Not at all? Well, when you have the sort of attacks that you've had in Jammu and Kashmir over the last few years, the way security forces have been targeted, construction camps, etc., it becomes very difficult to tell the Government of India that they have to talk."

The CM’s comments come in the backdrop of repeated terrorist attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, with India accusing Pakistan-based groups of orchestrating violence in the region.

No Hope for Article 370’s Restoration Under Modi Govt

In the interview, Abdullah was also asked about the possibility of restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s special status (Article 370) while Narendra Modi remains Prime Minister. His response was categorical:
"No! Simple as that."

His statement signals a pragmatic acceptance of the political realities under the BJP-led Central government, despite his party’s long-standing demand for the restoration of Article 370.

Political Landscape in J&K

Omar Abdullah took oath as Jammu and Kashmir's Chief Minister in October 2024, after the National Conference (NC)-Congress alliance secured a majority in the J&K Assembly elections. The results were as follows:

  • NC: 42 seats
  • Congress: 6 seats
  • BJP: 29 seats
  • PDP: 3 seats

With a new government in place, Abdullah has indicated his willingness to work with the BJP-led Centre for Jammu and Kashmir’s development, despite clear political and ideological differences.
