Responding to a query from a Pakistani journalist, Miller stated on Wednesday, ?We have seen those reports. We have also seen reports that the Indian Supreme Court on July 22 issued an interim stay on the implementation of those rules. So they're not actually in effect.? This comment comes amidst growing international scrutiny and concern over the directive, which had sparked significant debate.
The controversy centers around a recent directive from the Senior Superintendent of Police in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, which mandated that eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route display the names of their owners. The decision, aimed at enhancing law and order during the religious pilgrimage, was reportedly enforced in various districts across Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and even extended to Madhya Pradesh.
The directive faced backlash from several quarters, prompting a wave of petitions challenging its validity. The Supreme Court's interim stay effectively halted the enforcement of these rules, thereby addressing immediate concerns about their implementation.
