In a key political development in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday formally submitted his resignation to Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya, paving the way for the formation of a new government after the recent Assembly elections.
According to reports, Sarma is expected to take oath again as Chief Minister on May 12, marking his second consecutive term in office. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to be held in Guwahati.
Announcing the move on X, Sarma said, "I had the privilege of calling upon Hon’ble Governor Shri @Laxmanacharya54 and formally initiating the process for formation of the new government by tendering my resignation as Chief Minister and recommending the dissolution of the 15th Assam Legislative Assembly."
He further stated, "Hon’ble Governor has requested me to continue as the Caretaker Chief Minister until the new government assumes office. We look forward to his guidance and counsel in the coming days as we prepare for the formation of NDA 3.0."
The Governor has accepted his resignation and asked him to continue in a caretaker role until the new administration is officially sworn in.
The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a commanding mandate in the 126-member Assembly, winning 102 seats. The elections were conducted in a single phase on April 9, with counting completed on May 4, setting the stage for the BJP’s third consecutive term in the state.
