India Meteorological Department has issued a fresh warning over intensifying heatwave conditions across large parts of northern, central and eastern India, cautioning that extreme temperatures are likely to continue over the coming days.
In a public advisory released on Wednesday, the weather department said several regions across the plains of Northwest India, Central India and adjoining eastern states could experience prolonged heatwave to severe heatwave conditions through the week.
The IMD urged citizens to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary exposure to the scorching weather, warning that extended periods under intense heat could trigger serious health complications including dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
According to the advisory, people have been advised to remain hydrated by drinking sufficient water throughout the day and using oral rehydration solutions whenever necessary. The weather agency also recommended wearing loose-fitting, light-coloured cotton clothing to reduce heat stress during daytime hours.
Authorities further cautioned people against venturing outdoors during the hottest part of the day, especially between 12 noon and 4 pm, when temperatures are expected to peak in several cities.
For individuals who must travel outdoors, the IMD advised carrying protective items such as umbrellas, caps or sunglasses to minimise direct exposure to sunlight.
The department also encouraged people to avoid heavy meals and instead consume lighter food along with fruits rich in water content, including watermelon, cucumber and citrus fruits.
The advisory additionally warned against engaging in strenuous physical activities under direct sunlight, noting that excessive exertion in high temperatures can significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Several parts of India have already witnessed rising daytime temperatures in recent days, with weather experts closely monitoring conditions as the summer heat intensifies across multiple states.
