After months of anticipation, Indian Railways has officially confirmed the launch of the country’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper train, marking a major leap in long-distance rail travel. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the inaugural sleeper version of the Vande Bharat will operate between Guwahati and Kolkata (Howrah) and will be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The minister said all mandatory testing and safety certifications for the high-speed sleeper train have been successfully completed, adding that the exact launch date will be announced within the next few days. He also emphasised that ticket prices for the new service will be significantly cheaper than airfare on the same route, making it an affordable premium option for passengers.
Vande Bharat Sleeper: Expected Fares
According to the Railway Ministry, fares for the Guwahati–Howrah Vande Bharat Sleeper are expected to be:
-
Sleeper class: Around ₹2,300 (including meals)
-
Second AC: Approximately ₹3,000
-
First AC: Around ₹3,600
In comparison, air travel on the same sector typically costs between ₹6,000 and ₹8,000, positioning the train as a cost-effective alternative for long-distance overnight journeys.
Successful 180 kmph High-Speed Trial
Indian Railways recently completed the final high-speed trial of the Vande Bharat Sleeper on the Kota–Nagda section, under the supervision of the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS). During the trial, the train achieved a peak speed of 180 kmph and was assessed on parameters such as ride comfort, braking efficiency, vibration control, emergency response, and overall safety systems.
The CRS cleared the train for operations after finding its performance stable and safe at high speeds. Railway officials also conducted a water-glass stability test during the run to demonstrate the train’s advanced engineering and balance.
Designed for Long-Distance Comfort and Safety
The 16-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper rake has been specially designed for overnight and long-haul journeys. It will feature modern sleeper berths, advanced toilets, CCTV surveillance, automatic doors, digital passenger information systems, and enhanced fire detection mechanisms.
Key safety and technology features include:
-
KAVACH automatic train protection system
-
Crashworthy semi-permanent couplers
-
Regenerative braking
-
Fire-barrier doors between coaches
-
UV-C air-conditioning disinfection units
-
Emergency talk-back communication system
-
Aerosol-based fire detection in electrical panels and lavatories
With safety clearance now complete, the introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper is expected to redefine premium night travel on Indian Railways, especially on long routes connecting the Northeast with the rest of the country.
