The Bharatiya Janata Party has moved swiftly to organise government formation in Assam and West Bengal after registering decisive victories, appointing senior leaders to oversee the selection of legislative party heads. Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda has been named central observer for Assam, while Union Home Minister Amit Shah will take charge of similar responsibilities in West Bengal.

In Assam, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance delivered a commanding performance, securing an overwhelming majority in the 126-member Assembly. The BJP alone won 82 seats, comfortably crossing the halfway mark, while its allies—the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodoland People’s Front—added 10 seats each, further strengthening the alliance’s position.

The opposition saw a limited presence, with the Congress managing 19 seats, while smaller parties like All India United Democratic Front and Raijor Dal secured two seats each. The Trinamool Congress won a single seat in the state.

This victory marks the NDA’s third consecutive term in Assam and represents the BJP’s strongest showing in the state so far, improving on its previous performance. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attributed the success to sustained development initiatives and expressed gratitude to voters for their continued support.

The election, held on April 9, witnessed a high voter turnout of 85.96 per cent, indicating strong public participation and engagement. With observers now in place, the BJP is expected to soon finalise its leadership in both Assam and West Bengal as it prepares to form governments.
