'Keralam' Push Reaches Delhi: Union Cabinet Likely To Decide On Kerala’s Name Change Ahead Of Polls

na

The Union Cabinet is expected to consider a proposal to officially rename Kerala as “Keralam,” a move that could mark a major symbolic shift for the southern state and carry political weight with Assembly elections on the horizon, according to sources familiar with the development. If approved, the decision would formally recognise the name by which the state has long been known in its native language, Malayalam.

The proposal stems from a resolution passed by the Kerala Legislative Assembly urging the Centre to adopt “Keralam” as the state’s official name across all languages and records. The Assembly had earlier adopted a similar resolution, but it was sent back after the Union Home Ministry sought technical clarifications and procedural adjustments. Following those changes, the House passed the resolution again on June 25, 2024, reiterating its demand and strengthening the state government’s case.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who introduced the resolution, has consistently argued that “Keralam” better represents the state’s cultural, linguistic, and historical identity. He has said the name reflects the aspirations of the Malayalam-speaking people and echoes the idea of a unified region that took shape during India’s freedom movement. According to the state government, continuing with “Kerala” in official usage dilutes that linguistic legacy.

Any change to a state’s name requires clearance from the Union Cabinet and completion of formal legislative steps at the Centre. If the Cabinet gives its approval, “Keralam” would replace “Kerala” in all central government documents, notifications, and official communication, making the change legally binding nationwide.

While an official announcement is awaited after the Cabinet meeting, the timing of the move has drawn attention, coming as it does close to state elections. Supporters see it as long-overdue recognition of Kerala’s identity, while critics view it through a political lens. Either way, the Cabinet’s decision could soon turn “Keralam” from a cultural expression into the state’s formal name.
