Landslide In Wayanad: 24 Dead, Hundreds Feared Trapped

A massive landslide struck the hilly areas near Meppadi in Wayanad district today, resulting in the tragic death of at least 24 people. Hundreds are feared trapped under the debris as rescue operations continue.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan confirmed that all government agencies are engaged in the search and rescue operations. The state government has deployed Fireforce and NDRF teams to the affected area, with additional NDRF teams en route. Two teams from the Kannur Defence Security Corps have also been dispatched to assist in the rescue efforts.

The death toll has now risen to 30, with more casualties expected as the rescue operations progress. Around 60 people are currently stranded in a resort in Munnar due to blocked roads caused by another landslide. The fifth shutter of the Idukki dam has been opened to manage the water levels, releasing 2.5 lakh litres per second.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has set up numerous relief camps across the state. Over 15,000 people have been relocated from low-lying areas, including more than 5,500 from Wayanad.
