Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla's daughter, Anjali Birla, has made headlines by passing the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exam on her first attempt. Anjali, who is currently employed by the Ministry of Railways as an IAS officer, is the younger of Birla's two daughters. Her older sister, Akanksha, has been a source of guidance and motivation throughout Anjali's journey.
Anjali's achievement was recognized in the Department of Personnel and Training's Reserve List, published in August 2020, which included 89 candidates from various categories such as general, OBC, EWS, and SC. However, this accomplishment was soon overshadowed by a wave of rumors on social media. Critics alleged that Anjali had bypassed the standard examination and interview processes, attributing her success to her father's influence.
In response to these allegations, Anjali Birla provided evidence to The Quint, including a copy of her admit card, to prove she had followed the proper protocols. The Quint verified her roll number in the 2019 merit lists, confirming that Anjali had indeed taken both the preliminary and main examinations.
Anjali Birla, a graduate of Kota's Sophia School, pursued Political Science (Honours) at Ramjas College, University of Delhi. It was during her college years that she began preparing for the UPSC exam, which she successfully cleared on her first attempt.
Expressing her joy and dedication, Anjali told PTI, "I am very happy to get selected in the exam. I wanted to join the civil services to do something for the society as I always saw my father?s commitment towards the people of the country." She also acknowledged the support of her sister Akanksha, saying, "She constantly provided me with guidance and motivation."
Om Birla, who has been re-elected as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, is currently serving his second term. Despite the controversy surrounding Anjali's selection, her commitment to public service reflects the values and dedication demonstrated by her father.
