In a historic move to uphold public faith and encourage de-addiction, the Madhya Pradesh government has announced a comprehensive ban on liquor sales in 19 religious cities and gram panchayats, effective from April 1, 2025. The decision, approved by the state Cabinet on January 24, 2025, during a meeting held in Maheshwar, the city of Lokmata Ahilyabai, is aimed at maintaining the sanctity of these spiritual places and fostering a more disciplined, faith-driven society.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav described the initiative as a "historic step" to preserve the sanctity of religious sites and reduce alcohol consumption in areas of deep spiritual and historical significance. The ban will extend to one municipal corporation, six municipal councils, six city councils, and six gram panchayats.

“This decision reflects the people’s faith and reverence toward sacred places. It is a step toward de-addiction and preserving our cultural values,” CM Yadav stated, emphasizing the importance of aligning governance with the cultural and religious sentiments of the public.

A Broader De-Addiction and Cultural Preservation Initiative

The Madhya Pradesh government's decision is framed as part of a larger initiative to promote de-addiction while respecting the cultural and religious heritage of the state. By imposing a complete liquor ban in these regions, the state government ensures that places of worship and pilgrimage will remain alcohol-free, respecting the beliefs of millions of devotees.

The liquor ban will apply to all liquor shops, bars, and alcohol-selling establishments in the following urban and rural areas:

  1. Ujjain – Home to the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.
  2. Omkareshwar – A major pilgrimage site with another Jyotirlinga.
  3. Maheshwar – A historically significant town associated with Queen Ahilyabai Holkar.
  4. Mandleshwar – Known for its temples and ghats along the Narmada River.
  5. Orchha – Famous for the Ram Raja Temple, where Lord Ram is worshipped as a king.
  6. Maihar – Home to the revered Sharda Devi Temple.
  7. Chitrakoot – A religious site closely associated with Lord Ram’s exile.
  8. Datia – The seat of Pitambara Peeth, a major Shakti shrine.
  9. Panna – Known for temples and wildlife sanctuaries.
  10. Mandla – Home to Satdhara, a sacred site for the Gond tribal community.
  11. Multai – The origin of the Tapti River.
  12. Mandsaur – Famous for the Pashupatinath Temple.
  13. Amarkantak – The source of the Narmada River, a key pilgrimage center.

Gram Panchayats Included in the Ban:

  • Salkanpur
  • Kundalpur
  • Bandakpur
  • Barmankalan
  • Barmankhurd
  • Linga

By implementing this ban, Madhya Pradesh joins several other Indian states that have taken similar steps to promote alcohol prohibition in areas with religious or cultural significance. The move is expected to significantly contribute to reducing alcohol dependency and fostering a society driven by spiritual values and discipline.
