At least 10 people lost their lives after a tragic boat accident in the Yamuna River near Mathura on Friday afternoon, triggering large-scale rescue operations and an outpouring of condolences from top leaders.

The incident occurred when a boat carrying around 25 to 27 passengers reportedly overturned near a pontoon bridge site. Officials believe the vessel may have collided with the structure before capsizing in the river. Several passengers are still feared missing as rescue teams continue their search.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy and extended condolences to the bereaved families. He also prayed for the swift recovery of those injured and said that local authorities are actively assisting in relief efforts.

Mathura police officials, including DIG Shailesh Kumar Pandey, confirmed that multiple agencies have been deployed at the site. Fire services personnel, police teams, local divers, and boatmen are working together, while NDRF and SDRF units have been mobilised to strengthen the ongoing rescue operation. Authorities said that ten bodies have been recovered so far.

Officials further added that eyewitness accounts are being examined as part of the ongoing investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. Initial inputs suggest a possible collision with the pontoon bridge structure, but confirmation is awaited.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also expressed deep sorrow over the incident, calling it extremely painful. He directed senior officials to reach the site immediately and ensure uninterrupted rescue and relief operations, along with proper medical care for the injured. He also offered prayers for peace to the deceased and strength to the grieving families.

Rescue efforts remain underway as teams continue to search for missing passengers in challenging river conditions.
