Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer held detailed discussions on Thursday in Mumbai, addressing key bilateral concerns — including the sensitive issue of Khalistani extremism.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed that the topic featured prominently in the high-level dialogue. “The Khalistani extremist issue was discussed during a meeting held today between PM Modi and PM Starmer. PM emphasised that radicalism and violent extremism had no space in democratic societies & should not be allowed to use or abuse the freedoms provided by societies, and there was a need to move against them in the legal framework available on both sides,” Misri said.
PM Modi stressed the importance of coordinated efforts to counter extremist activities and ensure that the values of democracy are not exploited for violence or separatism. Both leaders reportedly agreed on the need for deeper security cooperation to tackle radical networks operating across borders.
Starmer, who arrived in Mumbai on Wednesday with a 125-member delegation of top business leaders, entrepreneurs, and educationists, reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to strengthening ties with India in multiple sectors, including security, trade, and education.
