A protest by industrial workers in Noida’s Phase 2 area spiralled into violence on Monday, triggering clashes, vandalism, and heavy police action. What began as a demonstration demanding better wages and improved working conditions quickly escalated into chaos, with protesters pelting stones and damaging vehicles and factory property.

Police forces rushed to the spot and deployed in large numbers to bring the situation under control. Authorities resorted to tear gas to disperse the crowd as tensions flared across the industrial belt, leaving the area on edge for several hours.

The unrest is rooted in long-standing grievances among workers, who have been demanding a comprehensive revision of wages along with basic labour rights. Among their key demands are bonus payments, weekly offs, proper overtime compensation, timely salary disbursement, and the issuance of salary slips. Workers have also called for the establishment of internal mechanisms such as a sexual harassment committee and a formal grievance redressal system.

Sources indicate that a recent 35 per cent hike in minimum wages announced in neighbouring Haryana has further intensified demands in Noida, with workers seeking similar benefits. The issue has been building over the past few days, with earlier protests already signalling growing dissatisfaction within the workforce.

In anticipation of unrest, the district administration had convened a high-level meeting on Sunday involving senior officials, including the state’s labour department leadership, to discuss measures aimed at maintaining industrial peace. The District Magistrate had also urged workers to remain calm and avoid being influenced by rumours.

Despite these efforts, the situation escalated on Monday, disrupting normal life and causing severe traffic congestion in several parts of the city. Commuters faced long delays as key routes were affected by the protest.

Responding to the developments, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed officials to take strict action against those attempting to incite violence and disturb public order.

With tensions still simmering, authorities are closely monitoring the situation, even as efforts continue to restore normalcy and address the concerns raised by workers.
