Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday reiterated the party's commitment to safeguarding constitutional values and democracy as he paid tribute to Dr B.R. Ambedkar on his 135th birth anniversary. Ambedkar, revered as the Father of the Indian Constitution, was remembered for his tireless fight for equality and justice.
Taking to social media platform X, Kharge, who is also the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, honoured Babasaheb’s enduring legacy in shaping India's democratic ethos based on justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity.
"Babasaheb Dr. Ambedkar gave us the countrymen the Constitution of India – based on the democratic values of justice, liberty, equality and fraternity – which is the most powerful tool for social justice and inclusive development. He described inclusiveness as his ultimate duty for the progress and unity of the country and strongly stressed on protecting the rights of all,” Kharge posted.
He added that the Congress Party has taken a solemn oath to continue defending the values enshrined in the Constitution.
“On his 135th birth anniversary, we reiterate our unwavering commitment to his ideas of social change and social justice. The Congress Party takes this oath that we will always remain committed to the protection of constitutional values and the protection of democracy,” he wrote.
Dr B.R. Ambedkar, fondly called 'Babasaheb', was the chief architect of the Indian Constitution and served as the first Law and Justice Minister of independent India. Born in an impoverished Dalit Mahar family in Madhya Pradesh, Ambedkar rose to become a towering advocate of equality and civil rights. From 1927 onwards, he led numerous movements against untouchability and social discrimination, becoming a symbol of empowerment for the marginalised.
Ambedkar’s vision of an inclusive India continues to inspire generations, and on this Ambedkar Jayanti, Kharge’s remarks reflect the Congress Party’s attempt to align itself closely with his ideals of social justice and democratic integrity.
