Ahead of the crucial Panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh, a startling revelation has rocked the state’s electoral system. An Election Commission probe, supported by Artificial Intelligence (AI), has flagged over 1 crore suspicious voter entries in the official rolls, raising deep concerns about voter list manipulation.

According to an India Today report, the AI audit uncovered shocking similarities in several entries — including identical names, caste, addresses, gender, and even age. Officials say such anomalies suggest the possibility of widespread duplication and fraudulent records, undermining the integrity of the voter database.

This is the first time that AI technology has been deployed to scrutinise Uttar Pradesh’s electoral rolls. The system mapped suspicious patterns across lakhs of entries, triggering an immediate follow-up verification process.

Following the findings, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) have been ordered to conduct door-to-door verification to weed out fake voters and confirm genuine entries. District Magistrates across Uttar Pradesh have also been instructed to carry out physical checks on all flagged cases.

State Election Commissioner Raj Pratap Singh confirmed that technology will now play a decisive role in strengthening the process. “An AI-based system will be used to detect fake voters, especially at sensitive booths,” he said, adding that face recognition systems are being integrated into the monitoring mechanism.

Authorities further stated that any complaints regarding voter list fraud would be subjected to a thorough investigation to ensure transparency. Officials emphasised that these corrective measures are vital to uphold the credibility of the upcoming Panchayat polls.
