Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, has once again invoked the controversial phrase describing Kashmir as Pakistan’s “jugular vein,” reigniting tensions with India. Speaking to members of the Pakistani diaspora during his ongoing visit to the United States, Munir said Pakistan “will never forget the issue of Kashmir” and called it “an unfinished international agenda.”
In his address, Munir claimed that Pakistan had responded “resolutely and forcefully” during recent tensions with India, warning that any “Indian aggression” would be met with a “befitting reply.” He also expressed gratitude to US President Donald Trump, crediting his “strategic leadership” with averting war between India and Pakistan and preventing other potential conflicts worldwide.
The remarks drew a sharp response from New Delhi. The Ministry of External Affairs dismissed Munir’s comments, stating, “How can anything foreign be in a jugular vein? Jammu and Kashmir is a Union Territory of India. Its only connection with Pakistan is the need for Islamabad to vacate the territories it occupies illegally.”
Munir’s visit marks his second trip to the US in less than two months, which he described as part of a push to strengthen Pakistan-US ties “on a constructive, sustainable, and positive path.” The Pakistani army confirmed that during his stop in Tampa, Munir attended the retirement ceremony of outgoing US CENTCOM Commander General Michael E. Kurilla and the change of command to Admiral Brad Cooper. He also met Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine, extending an invitation for him to visit Pakistan.
The visit also included discussions on trade opportunities. Munir said a proposed trade agreement with Washington could bring significant investments into Pakistan. He encouraged the Pakistani diaspora to play an active role in attracting foreign investment and to remain “confident in Pakistan’s bright future.” The diaspora, in turn, pledged their support for the country’s development.
