A tragic accident in Gonda district claimed the lives of 11 people on Sunday after a Bolero vehicle carrying 15 passengers veered off the road and fell into a canal. The victims were reportedly returning from a religious trip when the vehicle lost control and plunged into the water.
The incident took place in the Motiganj area, where the overloaded vehicle failed to negotiate a turn and crashed into the canal. Locals rushed to the spot to help rescue passengers before emergency services arrived. Despite frantic efforts, 11 occupants lost their lives, while four others were seriously injured and are undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital.
Authorities have yet to release the names of the deceased, as identification and notification of the families are still underway. The local police have begun an investigation into the cause of the accident, with preliminary findings pointing to overloading and speeding as possible factors.
Taking swift notice of the tragedy, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep sorrow and announced an ex-gratia compensation of ₹5 lakh each to the families of the deceased.
“The loss of life in the unfortunate accident in Gonda is extremely tragic and heart-wrenching. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. I have directed officials to ensure financial support and immediate medical treatment to the injured,” said the Chief Minister in an official statement.
