Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has reacted strongly to the viral video showing Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad slapping a canteen staffer at the Akashwani MLA Hostel in Mumbai. The incident took place after Gaikwad was allegedly served stale food, prompting him to physically assault a worker in front of others.
Speaking in the Legislative Council, Fadnavis stated: "No need to file any complaint, to take action against Sanjay Gaikwad, police should inquire into the matter..."
He further noted that such behavior reflects poorly on elected representatives and demanded immediate corrective steps. "This conduct lowers the dignity of office and sends a damaging message to the public," Fadnavis added.
The issue gained momentum after Gaikwad claimed he was served “rotten dal” and had to vomit. He justified the slap as a response to repeated complaints being ignored and said, unapologetically, that such action was in line with “Shiv Sena style.”
Even party leader and Deputy CM Eknath Shinde said that while poor food quality was unacceptable, “beating someone is not right.”
The incident triggered widespread criticism from opposition parties and the public alike. Several leaders have demanded strict disciplinary action and raised concerns over rising impunity among lawmakers.
