Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting a 50% subsidy on Metro fares for school and college students. Kejriwal proposed that the financial burden of this subsidy be shared equally by the Central and Delhi governments, with each contributing 50%.
In his letter, Kejriwal highlighted the financial challenges faced by students and their families, particularly those from economically weaker sections, in accessing affordable and reliable transportation for education. He emphasized that a reduced fare structure would encourage greater use of public transport among students, contributing to environmental benefits and reducing traffic congestion in the national capital.
The AAP leader stressed that the initiative would align with the government’s broader goals of promoting education and improving urban mobility. "Affordable transportation is essential to ensure that every student has access to education without financial barriers," Kejriwal stated in his appeal.
If implemented, the subsidy proposal could benefit thousands of students who rely on the Delhi Metro for their daily commute. The Delhi government has previously introduced free travel schemes for women in public buses, a move that has garnered significant support.
