In a development that could alter political dynamics in Punjab, Balkaur Singh, father of slain Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala, has announced that he will contest the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections from the Mansa constituency. His declaration comes just days ahead of the third death anniversary of Moose Wala, who was shot dead on May 29, 2022.

The announcement was made during the ‘Samvidhan Bachao Rally’ organised by the Congress party in Mansa. Singh stated that his decision is driven by a desire to seek justice for his son. He accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab of protecting those involved in Moose Wala's killing and criticised the worsening law and order in the state.

“My son was the pride of Punjab. But even after nearly three years, justice remains elusive. I will contest from Mansa in 2027 to strengthen this fight from within the system,” Singh told reporters at the rally.

He also voiced strong discontent with the governance under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, specifically mentioning the alleged inaction against gangsters. Singh raised questions about the status of Goldy Brar, who is accused of masterminding his son’s murder. Despite repeated assurances of his arrest, Brar continues to evade justice, Singh noted.

Singh further highlighted the rise in violent crimes across Punjab, stating, “Murders are happening in broad daylight. What kind of justice system is this?”

The Mansa constituency holds significant emotional value for the family. Sidhu Moose Wala had contested the 2022 assembly elections from this very seat on a Congress ticket, though he was unsuccessful.

Singh’s political entry has drawn both support and criticism. Congress Punjab President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring praised the move as a “courageous step.” On the other hand, opinions on social media have been mixed. While many have applauded Singh’s perseverance, others have accused him of using his son’s legacy for political advantage.
