Authorities in Bihar’s West Champaran district have initiated an investigation following the suspicious deaths of at least five individuals, with local residents attributing the fatalities to the consumption of spurious liquor.

Bettiah Superintendent of Police (SP) Shaurya Suman confirmed that police teams, along with medical professionals, have been assigned to investigate the cause of the deaths. "Around 10 teams of medical professionals have been formed, and we will only be able to ascertain the cause after the investigation reports are received," Suman said in a press conference on Sunday.

The deceased individuals, who belonged to different age groups, passed away on different days, raising further suspicion among locals. The district administration, alongside police personnel, conducted on-site investigations, inspecting the homes of the deceased to gather more information about the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

"We have visited the locations and, following joint orders, have constituted a team of medical professionals to examine the situation. The deaths took place on separate days, and the deceased individuals were from varying age groups. We will be able to comment further once we receive the report," said Bettiah SP Shaurya Suman.

While authorities are withholding conclusions pending the investigation, local residents have expressed concerns, suspecting that the deaths may be linked to the consumption of illicit or spurious liquor, a recurring problem in some areas of Bihar.
