BJP Led NDA Makes Strong Municipal Gains In Thrippunithura, Overtakes LDF In Key Kerala Local Body Battle

In a notable political development in Kerala’s local governance landscape, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has emerged ahead of the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the recently concluded municipal elections in Thrippunithura. Early results released by the Kerala State Election Commission (SEC) show the NDA securing victory or leading in 14 wards, signaling a significant shift in voter sentiment in the high-profile municipality.

The Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF, which has traditionally held influence in several urban pockets, was seen trailing with wins or leads in eight wards. Meanwhile, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) managed to take the lead in five wards, while independent and smaller group candidates were ahead in two wards, reflecting a fragmented but competitive electoral contest.

The Thrippunithura outcome is being closely watched as an indicator of changing political equations in urban Kerala, especially with the NDA expanding its footprint in regions where it has historically remained on the margins.

The local body elections across Kerala were conducted earlier this month in two phases on December 9 and December 11. According to official data, the state recorded its highest-ever voter turnout in local body polls at 73.69 per cent, underlining strong public participation. The first phase saw a turnout of 70.91 per cent, while the second phase registered an even higher 76.08 per cent.

Kerala State Election Commissioner A Shahjahan confirmed that the polling process remained largely smooth and peaceful across the state. He announced that the oath-taking ceremony for newly elected panchayat members and municipal councillors will be held at 10 am on December 21, followed by the swearing-in of corporation councillors at 11 am on the same day.

Shahjahan also noted that only 1.37 per cent of EVMs required replacement due to minor technical issues, a figure he described as minimal. Thanking voters, political parties, and election officials, he said the peaceful conduct of polls reflected the democratic maturity of the state.
