The Bharatiya Janata Party has announced that its new government in West Bengal will be sworn in on May 9 at the iconic Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata—a venue long associated with massive political gatherings and historic moments.

The decision to hold the ceremony at Brigade is being seen as a calculated symbolic move, placing the transition of power at one of Bengal’s most politically charged public spaces.

A Landmark Rooted in History

Situated within the expansive Maidan—often described as the city’s green heart—the Brigade Parade Ground traces its origins back to the aftermath of the Battle of Plassey. The British East India Company developed the area as an open field for military exercises after constructing Fort William, gradually shaping it into one of the largest open spaces in the city.

Over time, the ground evolved from a colonial drill site into a focal point for democratic expression, hosting some of India’s most influential public events.

From Leaders’ Speeches to Mega Rallies

The venue has witnessed addresses by towering figures such as Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. In later decades, it became synonymous with large-scale rallies of the Left Front and continues to serve as a central stage for major parties, including the BJP and the Trinamool Congress.

Massive Scale, Unmatched Reach

Unlike enclosed stadiums, Brigade Parade Ground is an open expanse capable of accommodating enormous crowds. Political events here routinely draw lakhs of people, with large gatherings extending into adjacent Maidan areas. Its flexibility and scale make it one of the country’s most prominent venues for rallies and state ceremonies.

Beyond Politics

The Maidan area also houses several of Kolkata’s most recognised landmarks, including Eden Gardens and Victoria Memorial. While the ground is under the control of the Indian Army, it remains accessible for public functions under regulated conditions, balancing civic use with security requirements.
