The Bharatiya Janata Party has begun laying the groundwork for the 2026 Assembly elections by announcing key organisational appointments for major states. On Monday, the party named Union Minister Piyush Goyal as the election in-charge for Tamil Nadu, signalling an early and focused push in the southern state. He will be supported by Arjun Ram Meghwal and Murlidhar Mohol, who have been appointed as co-in-charges to strengthen coordination and campaign planning on the ground.
For Assam, the BJP has once again placed its trust in senior leader Baijayant Panda, appointing him as the party’s election in-charge for the state. Panda will be assisted by Sunil Kumar Sharma and Darshana Ben Jardosh as co-in-charges. The appointments reflect the party’s strategy of deploying experienced leaders who have previously handled high-stakes elections.
Both Tamil Nadu and Assam are scheduled to go to the polls in 2026. Piyush Goyal has earlier handled election responsibilities for Tamil Nadu, including during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, while Baijayant Panda has played a key role in multiple BJP campaigns. Panda was election in-charge for Assam during the 2021 Assembly polls, when the BJP-led alliance retained power, and has also overseen campaigns in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
The organisational reshuffle comes at a time when the BJP is projecting confidence following strong performances in recent elections. The party and its allies in the National Democratic Alliance have highlighted their decisive victory in the Bihar Assembly elections as a sign of growing public support. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described that mandate as an endorsement of what he called pro-people governance, a message the BJP is expected to carry into upcoming state polls.
