The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has formally kickstarted its campaign for the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections by releasing its first list of 66 candidates on Monday. The elections, expected to be held in January next year, are being seen as a crucial political test in Mumbai, the country’s financial capital.

Riding high on its recent performance in municipal councils and nagar panchayat polls across Maharashtra, the BJP is aiming to consolidate its urban base and make major gains in the BMC. The party is contesting the civic elections as part of the Mahayuti alliance, alongside Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena. While the formal seat-sharing agreement is yet to be announced, alliance sources indicate that the BJP is likely to contest around 140 of the total 227 BMC wards, with the remaining seats going to the Shinde faction.

The first list reflects a mix of experienced faces, women candidates, and local grassroots leaders, signalling the BJP’s strategy to balance organisational strength with fresh outreach at the ward level.
