A tragic incident unfolded at the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj, where a stampede-like situation at the sacred Sangam led to the deaths of at least 15 people in the early hours of Wednesday. The unfortunate event coincided with Mauni Amavasya, one of the most significant bathing days, drawing an estimated 8 to 10 crore devotees seeking spiritual purification.
The chaos erupted around 2 AM when a sudden surge of pilgrims moving towards the ghats led to a breakdown in crowd control measures. Multiple people sustained injuries, prompting an immediate response from authorities who worked swiftly to manage the crisis and transport the wounded to nearby hospitals. Despite the distressing turn of events, officials have since claimed that the situation has been brought under control.
Holy Rituals Disrupted, But Akharas Resume Amrit Snan Following the incident, the revered Akharas—comprising the Sanyasi, Bairagi, and Udaseen sects—initially postponed the Amrit Snan, a ritualistic dip in the holy waters. However, later in the day, the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad confirmed that the ceremonial bath would proceed.
Ravindra Puri, President of the Akhara Parishad, stated, “Due to the overwhelming crowd, we had to delay the snan in the morning. Now that the ghats have been cleared, all Akharas will proceed with their traditional dip.”
PM Modi, Yogi Adityanath Take Stock of the Situation Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally intervened, making multiple calls to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to assess the situation. Additionally, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda reached out to ensure medical aid and crisis management were effectively deployed.
CM Yogi Adityanath urged pilgrims to adhere strictly to the administration’s directives. “All devotees are requested to use the nearest ghats for bathing and avoid overcrowding at the Sangam,” he stated in a post on social media. He reassured pilgrims that adequate arrangements were in place and urged them not to fall prey to misinformation.
Political Firestorm Erupts Over Alleged Mismanagement The Opposition parties were quick to condemn the state and central governments, citing negligence and poor crowd management. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge expressed grief over the tragedy while criticizing the arrangements. “Despite spending thousands of crores, such a lapse is unacceptable,” he remarked.
Similarly, Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav blamed administrative failures for the tragic event, calling for accountability and corrective measures to prevent further mishaps.
Authorities on High Alert as Maha Kumbh Continues In light of the incident, a high-level meeting was held at the CM’s residence to review safety protocols. The Mela authorities had issued crowd management advisories a day prior, instructing pilgrims to use designated lanes and avoid unnecessary congestion at the ghats.
The Maha Kumbh Mela, held every 12 years at the Triveni Sangam—the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati—remains the world’s largest religious gathering. Despite this tragedy, devotees continue to arrive in Prayagraj, reaffirming their faith in the spiritual significance of the holy dip.
