CM Atishi Demands LG Saxena Step Aside Over Toxic Yamuna Water Crisis, Accuses Him Of False Narrative

Delhi Chief Minister Atishi on Wednesday criticized Lieutenant Governor (LG) V. K. Saxena in a scathing letter, accusing him of spreading a "false narrative" regarding the high levels of toxins in the Yamuna River. CM Atishi's letter came a day after Saxena expressed concern over remarks made by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who claimed that the Haryana government was poisoning the Yamuna River.

Atishi slammed the LG for failing to address the critical issue of ammonia levels in Delhi's water supply, which are dangerously high and pose severe health risks. She suggested that if Saxena was unable to fulfill his duties effectively, he should "step aside" and allow someone more capable to take charge.

In her letter, Atishi said, "Instead of addressing the pressing issue of dangerously high ammonia levels in Delhi's water, you have placed baseless accusations and peddled a false narrative to deflect from your utter failure in fulfilling your responsibilities." She also called on Saxena to stop following the political directives of the BJP and to prioritize the well-being of Delhi's residents over political interests.

The row began when the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) accused the BJP-led Haryana government of releasing untreated water into the Yamuna, which allegedly compromised Delhi’s water supply. In response, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini denied the claims and threatened legal action for defamation. Meanwhile, Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit also questioned why Haryana Police had not acted against AAP leaders for allegedly spreading false information.

CM Atishi emphasized that despite being in charge of the Delhi Jal Board, Saxena had taken no meaningful action to address the contamination and instead prioritized his political agenda over public health.

The controversy continues to fuel political tensions between Delhi's ruling AAP party and the BJP-led Haryana government, with accusations of neglect and mismanagement on both sides.
