In a violent conflict over land in Pakistan's turbulent Kurram tribal district, at least 36 people have been killed and 162 others injured, officials reported on Sunday. The clashes erupted in the Boshera village of Upper Kurram, a region historically plagued by tribal and sectarian violence, as well as militant activity.
Deputy Commissioner Javedullah Mehsud confirmed the casualties, stating, "The tribal clashes have resulted in 36 deaths and 162 injuries over the past five days in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Kurram district, bordering Afghanistan." The fighting broke out due to a land dispute between two tribes, and the violence quickly spread to several other areas, including Peewar, Tangi, Balishkhel, Khaar Kalay, Maqbal, Kunj Alizai, Para Chamkani, and Karman.
Residents described the intensity of the conflict, noting the use of heavy weaponry such as mortar shells and rocket launchers. "Rivals have been using sophisticated weapons against each other, causing significant damage and casualties," said a local resident. Mortar and rocket fire were also reported in the main cities of Parachinar and Sadda.

The violence has prompted the closure of educational institutions and markets, and major roads have been blocked, disrupting daily life. In response, heavy contingents of police and security forces have been deployed to the affected areas in an attempt to restore order.
Efforts to broker peace have been partially successful. Authorities, with the assistance of tribal elders, military leadership, police, and the district administration, have managed to negotiate a truce between Shia and Sunni tribes in some areas, including Boshera, Malikhel, and Dandar. Despite this, sporadic firing continues in other parts of the district, and officials are working tirelessly to extend the ceasefire across all conflict zones.
"Tribal fighters have vacated their trenches, which are now under the control of law enforcement," an official stated. However, the situation remains volatile, with reports of ongoing skirmishes in certain regions. Efforts are ongoing to establish a complete ceasefire and bring lasting peace to the area.
The recent clashes are a stark reminder of the persistent instability in Pakistan's tribal districts, where land disputes, sectarian tensions, and militant activities frequently lead to violence and loss of life. The government and local authorities continue to face significant challenges in maintaining peace and security in these regions.
