Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta faced a shocking attack at her official Civil Lines residence on Wednesday. The assailant, identified as 41-year-old Rajesh Bhai Sakariya from Rajkot, Gujarat, was quickly apprehended by the CM’s security team.

Reports reveal that Sakariya may have been mentally unstable. Speaking to the police, his mother, Bhanu Sakariya, stated, “He has a history of aggression, sometimes even towards family members. He drives a rickshaw and recently returned from Rajkot. We were worried about his behavior.”

Reports indicate that the man may have been motivated by multiple grievances. While some suggest his anger stemmed from the Supreme Court’s recent order to relocate stray dogs to shelters in Delhi-NCR, others claim he wanted a relative, lodged in Tihar Jail, to be released. The exact motive is still being probed by Delhi Police.

According to initial reports from IANS, Sakariya confronted CM Gupta, handed over some documents, referred to a court case, and then physically assaulted her—slapping her multiple times and pulling her hair. The 51-year-old CM was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital and is under close medical supervision.

Delhi Police top officials reached the scene promptly, and security around the Chief Minister’s residence has been significantly tightened. A detailed investigation into the incident has been launched, with authorities examining CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts to ascertain the attacker’s intentions.

CM Gupta, while shaken, is reportedly stable. Political leaders and citizens alike have condemned the attack, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding public officials while allowing democratic engagement.
