In a shocking security lapse, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was physically attacked on Wednesday during her routine ‘Jan Sunvai’ (public hearing) at the official residence in Civil Lines.
According to police sources, a man in his 40s, posing as a complainant, approached the CM with some documents before suddenly slapping her. Security personnel immediately overpowered him and handed him over to the police. The Chief Minister, visibly shaken, was rushed to a nearby hospital for a medical check-up.
Top Delhi Police officials reached the CM’s residence soon after the incident, and an inquiry has been ordered to ascertain how the accused managed to bypass security checks. His identity has not yet been disclosed by the authorities.
The attack has triggered sharp political reactions across party lines. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva strongly condemned the incident, calling it a “serious mishap” that demands a thorough probe.
Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav termed the attack “deeply unfortunate” and raised concerns over law and order in the national capital. “If the Chief Minister of Delhi is not safe in her own residence, how can ordinary citizens, especially women, feel secure?” Yadav asked.
AAP leader and former Delhi CM Atishi also issued a statement condemning the assault and demanded strict action against those responsible for the breach.
Officials revealed that this is not the first time a Delhi CM has faced such an attack. In 2019, former CM Arvind Kejriwal was also slapped during a roadshow in the Lok Sabha election campaign.
