Delhi’s Patiala House Court on Monday granted 26/11 Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Rana permission to make a one-time phone call to his family. The court directed that the call be made strictly under the supervision of a senior Tihar Jail official and in accordance with jail rules.

The permission comes after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) gave its nod for the call, following Rana’s plea citing personal and humanitarian grounds.

In addition to the limited communication relief, the court has asked the jail authorities to submit a detailed report on Rana’s health condition within 10 days. This follows claims by Rana’s counsel that he is facing certain medical issues which need urgent attention.

Furthermore, the court has also directed the authorities to clarify their position on whether Rana can be allowed regular phone calls in the future, as per the provisions laid out in the Jail Manual.

Rana, a key accused in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, is currently lodged in Tihar Jail while facing extradition proceedings to the United States.
