In response to a marginal uptick in COVID-19 cases, the Delhi government has issued a health advisory to ensure preparedness across medical institutions, while maintaining that the situation is under control and does not warrant alarm.
The advisory, released by the Health Department, emphasizes routine surveillance and precautionary measures rather than emergency action. All hospitals — both public and private — have been directed to remain ready with adequate beds, oxygen supply, medicines, and functional equipment such as ventilators and BiPAP machines.
While experts have acknowledged a mild resurgence of cases, especially in some parts of Southeast Asia, they stressed that most infections remain asymptomatic or extremely mild, not requiring hospitalization. As of May 19, 2025, India has only 257 active COVID-19 cases, with no significant spike in ICU admissions or serious illness.
The Delhi advisory mandates:
- Testing of at least 5% of Influenza-like Illness (ILI) cases and 100% of Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) cases, in line with ICMR guidelines.
- Daily reporting of ILI/SARI data on the Integrated Health Information Platform (IHIP).
- Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) of all positive COVID-19 samples to detect emerging variants early, with samples to be sent to Lok Nayak Hospital.
- Enforcement of respiratory hygiene practices including mask-wearing within hospital premises.
Refresher training of healthcare staff and functional checks of emergency medical equipment have also been ordered. The advisory reiterates that while the current cases are few and mild, constant vigilance and proactive preparedness are essential to prevent any unexpected surge.
