Arvind Kejriwal is set to resign as the Chief Minister of Delhi, with a meeting scheduled with Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena at 4:30 pm today to officially tender his resignation. This development follows Kejriwal's release from Tihar Jail on bail in the excise policy case. Before the resignation, AAP MLAs will convene a crucial meeting at 11:30 am at Kejriwal's residence to decide on his successor.
Kejriwal, the AAP national convenor, had announced on Sunday that he would resign within 48 hours and called for early elections in Delhi. He declared he would not resume his role as Chief Minister until he received a "certificate of honesty" from the people. He emphasized that he and Manish Sisodia would return to their respective roles only if the public affirmed their integrity.
Kejriwal has outlined specific criteria for his successor. The individual chosen must possess experience in organizational work and have the ability to operate within the framework of the state government. Kejriwal is looking for a "proper messenger" who can effectively communicate the achievements of the AAP-led Delhi government to the public. Additionally, the new Chief Minister must act as a bridge between the Lieutenant Governor and AAP, particularly in light of frequent disagreements. Kejriwal stressed the importance of having a peacemaker who can facilitate smoother relations and ensure the LG approves crucial files.
This move comes amid growing tension and political uncertainty in the capital. The criteria set by Kejriwal indicate a strategic approach to ensure the new leader can navigate the complexities of Delhi's governance, particularly the ongoing power tussle between the Delhi government and the Lieutenant Governor's office.
