Former Rajasthan Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot has raised serious concerns about the current state of democracy in India, warning that the nation is witnessing "a kind of tension and polarisation" unseen in the post-Independence era.
Speaking in Udaipur, Gehlot remarked, “The entire country is witnessing a kind of tension and polarisation which is there for the first time in post-independent India. It’s not in anyone’s interest. Democracy becomes strong only when all religions and castes move together. Winning elections is one thing, but saving democracy is another thing.”
Gehlot emphasized that democratic values are eroding under the present political climate and accused the ruling establishment of systematically weakening the Constitution. “Slowly, democracy is being murdered, and the Constitution is in danger. Rahul Gandhi is repeatedly saying to save the Constitution,” he stated, aligning with the Congress party’s broader campaign to highlight threats to constitutional principles.
He also underscored the vital role of the opposition in a healthy democracy, asserting that without it, governance becomes hollow. “Opposition is important in democracy, and what is a government in a democracy without opposition?... Opposition raises voice for the people,” he added.
