A powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake rattled Kunar province in northeastern Afghanistan late Sunday night, leaving around 600 people dead and 1,500 others injured. The tremors were also felt in several parts of Pakistan, spreading panic among residents.

The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported that the earthquake struck at 00:47 IST with its epicentre at 34.50°N latitude and 70.81°E longitude, occurring at a depth of 160 km. In an official post on X, the NCS confirmed: "EQ of M: 6.3, On: 01/09/2025 00:47:41 IST, Lat: 34.50 N, Long: 70.81 E, Depth: 160 Km, Location: Afghanistan."

In Nangarhar province, at least nine casualties have been reported. Authorities warned that the total death toll could rise as rescue teams struggle to reach the remote and hard-to-access areas. Health Minister Sharafat Zaman told The Times of India, “The number of casualties and injuries is high, but since the area is difficult to access, our teams are still on site.”
