In a dramatic turn of events, AAP leader Priyanka Kakkar on Thursday accused Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini of staging a "fake" act of drinking Yamuna water to counter allegations made by former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Kakkar claimed that Saini did not actually consume the water but immediately spat it out, calling the act a "political stunt" to mislead the public.
The controversy began when Kejriwal alleged that the Haryana government had "poisoned" the Yamuna River, endangering the lives of Delhi residents. In response, Saini visited the banks of the Yamuna in Delhi’s Palla village on Wednesday, where he took a sip of the river water to prove its safety. However, Kakkar dismissed the gesture as a "drama," stating, "Everyone saw the drama that Nayab Singh Saini created by pretending to drink water from the Yamuna. He did not drink that water and immediately spit it out."
Kakkar further criticized the BJP-led Haryana government, urging Saini to address the real issue of Yamuna’s pollution instead of engaging in theatrics. "Instead of misleading people and doing all this drama, he must tell how Yamuna water is so polluted," she said.
The AAP leader also took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, questioning his priorities after a recent tragedy during the Mahakumbh. "After such a big tragedy in Mahakumbh yesterday, PM Narendra Modi was in Delhi to criticise Arvind Kejriwal... We have told everyone that if you vote for BJP, the first thing you'll have to do is buy a generator," Kakkar added, referencing Delhi’s ongoing power crisis.
Meanwhile, Saini defended his actions, calling Kejriwal’s allegations "unfortunate" and politically motivated. "An unfortunate statement by Arvind Kejriwal was given to create fear in the minds of people for his political benefits," Saini told reporters. He reiterated that the Haryana government had not polluted the Yamuna and accused Kejriwal of spreading misinformation.
The war of words comes amid heightened political tensions ahead of the upcoming elections. In a separate development, Kakkar also addressed the recent seizure of a car near Delhi’s Punjab Bhawan, which contained AAP pamphlets, liquor bottles, and cash. She claimed that the vehicle’s owner is a BJP worker from Maharashtra and that the number plate was forged.
