In a shocking breach of security in Delhi’s high-security diplomatic enclave, Congress Lok Sabha MP M Sudha was injured in a chain-snatching incident near the Poland Embassy in Chanakyapuri on the morning of August 4.
According to the Delhi Police, the assailant—who fled on a two-wheeler after violently snatching Sudha’s gold chain—has now been arrested, and the stolen chain has been recovered. The accused is a resident of Okhla and is currently in police custody.
“The case of snatching of the chain of Hon'ble Member of Parliament has been solved. The accused has been arrested and the chain has been recovered. More details shall be shared in due course,” the police said in an official statement on August 6.
Sudha, a parliamentarian from Tamil Nadu, was out for a walk in the elite Chanakyapuri area when she was suddenly attacked. The assailant snatched a gold chain weighing over four sovereigns, injuring her neck in the process.
Deeply shaken, Sudha reached out to Union Home Minister Amit Shah via message: “Sir, I have suffered injury on my neck, lost my gold chain weighing more than four sovereigns, and I am highly traumatised by this criminal attack.”
She also expressed concern over the lack of safety in areas that are supposed to be among the most secure in the national capital.
“If this can happen in a diplomatic zone, what about the safety of common women across Delhi?” she questioned.
In response, multiple police teams launched a swift investigation. With the help of surveillance footage and local intelligence, the suspect was identified and apprehended within 48 hours.
