The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of a disturbing media report titled "DMK leader’s wife alleges he forced girls to sleep with politicians", involving grave allegations of sexual harassment and coercion by a DMK youth wing office bearer in Tamil Nadu.
In response, NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma has written to the Director General of Police (DGP), Tamil Nadu, urging an immediate, impartial, and transparent investigation into the matter. The Commission has strongly advocated for the survivor’s safety and stressed the need to form an independent Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case, ensuring that there is no political interference.
The NCW letter highlights the seriousness of the allegations and calls for urgent action under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. The Commission has also demanded that the Tamil Nadu Police submit a detailed Action Taken Report (ATR), along with a copy of the FIR, within three days.
Reiterating the Commission’s zero-tolerance policy towards crimes against women, Chairperson Rekha Sharma said, “The safety and dignity of women must be safeguarded at all costs. The nature of the allegations is extremely serious and warrants swift and unbiased legal action.”
