Shaktikanta Das, former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor, has been appointed as Principal Secretary-2 to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved his appointment, which will remain in effect until the end of the PM’s term or until further orders.
Das, 67, served as RBI Governor for six years, overseeing key financial policies before stepping down in December 2024. His tenure was marked by critical reforms, including monetary policy changes and handling economic challenges post-COVID-19. Sanjay Malhotra succeeded him as the 26th RBI Governor.
A 1980-batch Tamil Nadu cadre IAS officer, Das has a strong financial and administrative background. He previously served as Economic Affairs Secretary, playing a crucial role during the 2016 demonetization drive. He holds a master’s degree in history from St Stephen’s College and a postgraduate degree in public administration from the University of Birmingham.
