Delivering his Independence Day address from the Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shifted the spotlight to a silent but fast-growing health danger — obesity. Citing expert projections, he warned that if current trends continue, “one out of every three Indians” could face obesity-related problems in the near future.

“When I speak about sports, I also want to share a concern with you, one that every family in our country should take seriously,” Modi said. “Obesity is becoming a major crisis for our nation… Families should decide that when cooking oil is purchased for the home, it should be 10% less than usual.”

The Prime Minister proposed a simple but impactful solution — consciously reduce household oil purchases by a tenth. A family that typically buys two litres a month, he explained, could bring home 1.8 litres instead and adjust cooking habits accordingly.

Health experts have long warned that cooking oil, while a staple in Indian kitchens, is extremely calorie-dense — just one tablespoon carries around 120 calories. Excessive consumption, especially in deep-fried foods, can contribute to weight gain, heart disease, diabetes, and other metabolic disorders. While nutrition guidelines suggest 600–700 ml of oil per person each month, many households far exceed this limit.

Modi tied the message to his broader vision for a healthier India, stressing that diet and physical activity must work together to fight lifestyle diseases. “Health is the real wealth,” he reminded the nation, framing mindful eating and fitness as acts of national responsibility.
