Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked India’s 79th Independence Day with the longest address of his tenure, speaking for an uninterrupted 103 minutes from the Red Fort on Friday. The speech broke his own record of 98 minutes set in 2024, and far surpassed the historic benchmark of 72 minutes held by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1947.
The address, which covered a wide spectrum of issues, featured three major announcements — the launch of the Viksit Bharat Rozgaar Yojna to generate employment, next-generation GST reforms aimed at easing the tax burden, and the Sudarshan Chakra Mission, focused on strengthening national defence capabilities. Modi wove these announcements into a broader narrative of national security, economic resilience, technological innovation, infrastructure expansion, and social welfare.
The Prime Minister’s track record on Independence Day speeches shows a steady trend toward extended addresses. In 2016, he spoke for 96 minutes; in 2019, 92 minutes; and in 2023, about 90 minutes. His shortest was in 2017, clocking in at just 56 minutes.
For historical comparison, several past prime ministers opted for brevity. Both Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi delivered their shortest Independence Day speeches at just 14 minutes each. Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh also tended to keep their remarks relatively concise compared to Modi’s detailed, agenda-heavy style.
