Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Friday highlighted the dual challenges and achievements of the hill state, addressing both the extensive damages from recent natural calamities and the encouraging decline in maternal mortality rates.
Speaking on the losses caused by landslides and flash floods, Dhami said, “The Government of India has always supported us in the case of any disaster. According to the initial assessment, the state has suffered a loss of ₹5,700 crore. A central team will also visit the state to conduct an assessment. I have full faith that the Government of India will support us like every time.”
The CM noted that the central government’s timely assistance has been crucial in previous disasters, expressing confidence that rehabilitation and recovery measures will be carried out effectively with Union support.
On a more positive note, Dhami welcomed the significant decline of 12.5% in the Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) in Uttarakhand, calling it a reflection of consistent policies for women’s health, safety, and empowerment.
He remarked, “We are now seeing results of women safety and empowerment efforts. ‘Matri Shakti’ has played a huge role in our state, including in the formation of the state and the running of the economy of the state. There is a lot of talent in the women of Uttarakhand. The self-help groups in the state are producing high-quality products. Women of the state will play the most significant role in the development of the state.”
The Chief Minister emphasised that women’s collectives and self-help groups are emerging as economic drivers, promoting local products while strengthening grassroots development. He assured that the state government will continue to expand initiatives focused on women’s empowerment, health, and livelihood.
